DISASTER MANAGEMENT

What to do during an earthquake

  1. Stay safe as possible during an earthquake. Minimize your movements to a few steps that reach a nearby safe place, stay there until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.
  2. Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway.
  3. DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a study table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner to the building.
  4. Protect yourself by staying under the lintel or an inner door, in the corner of a room under a table or even under a bed.
  5. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, in anything that could fall. (such as lightning fixtures or furniture).
  6. Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler system of fire alarms may turn on.
  7. If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings; at exist; and alongside exterior walls. Most earthquake- related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.
  8. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go ououtside. Most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

What to do to during a fire

  1. In case of a fire one should never use escalators ( irrespective of the height of the building which is being evacuated).
  2. If there is a lot of smoke, crawl on the floor. To reduce smoke inhalation, put a wet handkerchief to cover your nose.
  3. if you can go to an open area (for example and covered terrace open ground etc.) there will be no risk of smoke inhalation.
  4. If your clothes are on fire, drop to the ground and roll until the flames go out.
  5. Always evacuate in an orderly manner. If people push, a stampede can occur, causing much more injury, and, it might take much longer to evacuate.
  6. Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler system of fire alarms may turn on.
  7. Get everyone out quickly, and then call for emergency assistance.
